An Interstellar Rosetta Stone
I have always been fascinated by space observation and exploration. The danger, the unknown, the inconceivable distances, the variable gravity and the infinite number of worlds are some of the elements that have always stimulated my imagination and creativity. We are a generation that has come too late to explore and discover new continents and we might have come too early to travel to new worlds. But with the technology and science we possess today, we are getting close to know what really lies beyond our solar system.
After the first men were sent to the moon, we immediately thought about sending messages into the cosmos to leave a legacy or directly contact potential intelligent aliens. In my opinion, it could be the ultimate form of graphic or communication design. Design a message destined to a non-human intelligent being, indeed questions all the rules and principles previously established in the human forms of communication. This concept truly captivates me and it is the reason why I chose to study it for my final dissertation. I aimed to learn about the history of extra-terrestrial communication from its beginning to the present day in order to reflect on our perception of language and culture and finally, research the inventions, the technology and dialects needed to design such a message.
The binary visuals on the cover and around some of the words and illustrations are from the “hydrogen atom transition” language used on the Pioneer and Voyager plaques. The cover, for example, represents our cosmic address with earth in the middle and the distance to our closest neighbour galaxies expressed in pulsars.
TGV001
A zine dedicated to my grandfather Jean Philippe Bernard, chief-engineer on the TGV001 project. Through audio and visual explorations, I told here the story of the first french high-speed electric train. An engineered revolution that changed the country's social and economical landscape and remains the pride of my grandfather.
Studying the insights of my grandfather’s life and career, the TGV001 project and its consequences was truly passionating. It made me realise how much can be achieved with technical competences and a will to succeed. It allowed me to learn a substantial amount of informations about the geopolitic situation in France, the operating ways of a railways company and even about the engineering process of conceptualising an idea. Thus, as much pride my grandfather gets from creating the first TGV, it isn’t something he talks about a lot. And I hope that I can shine a light on his amazing high-speed electric train project through this publication, sharing historical facts about his career and ventures, some of them still unknown to most of my family.
